As hopefully all of you know already, there is no troop meeting this Tuesday, November 21st. We hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday.
On Tuesday, November 28th, we will hold a shortened troop meeting followed by our fourth quarter Court of Honor. Scouts will meet at 6:30pm in the social hall like usual; the Court of Honor will begin at 7:15pm in the sanctuary. Family and friends are all welcome to join us for the ceremony. (There will be no meal provided; please eat ahead of time.) We have received a new order of Class B Troop 5 t-shirts in a variety of sizes. These shirts will be available for purchase after the Court of Honor on the 28th. Cost is $10 per shirt, paid to troop treasurer Melissa Day.
Our troop fundraising coordinator (“popcorn princess”) Shayna Hart needs any remaining popcorn orders that were placed to be picked up no later than the Court of Honor on the 28th. If you somehow still owe any money for popcorn, that money was due at the end of October; please get it to Shayna ASAP.
Finally, our annual rechartering process is underway. Families should expect to receive invoices for 2024 dues if their scout did not reach at least $750 in popcorn sales.
Big weekend and week coming up and we need all of you to come and support!
On Sunday we have two Eagle Projects…
12:00 noon at Paradise Creek Nature Park, 1009 Victory Blvd, Portsmouth, VA with Colin McGlynn
5:00 pm Sunday at St Pius, 7800 Halprin Drive, Norfolk, VA 23518 with Nick Lemma
Please wear class B shirts and work pants. Lunch will be provided for Colin’s project. Bring water bottles for both. Remember everyone works hard to get to this level and all of you will need support at some point so let’s be there for our fellow scouts!
Last but not least… for the next meeting everyone will need to need to wear full Class A uniforms as we will be honoring our two newest Eagle Scouts, Ely and Weber Staggs. Let’s show them support and be our best selves in our best uniforms.
We found an alternative winter camp with registration starting next Wednesday, November 1. We spoke with the Occoneechee council and they mentioned registration will fill immediately, similar to Pipsico. This year’s Leaders Guide isn’t available yet, but they said it will be updated soon. Here’s a link to last year’s program: SF-leaders-guide-April-2023-As-of-2-7-23.pdf (ocscouts.org)
Our popcorn season is quickly coming to a close. As of right now, we have sold over $12,000 worth of popcorn and still have inventory to sell. The last order we can place is on November 1st. But when we place this order, we must simultaneously pay for all of it. Shayna Hart is planning on placing the order Sunday, October 29, so that she has time to get a total due and a check to pay for the order. If you need something specific, she must have your request and payment by Saturday, October 28. The remaining inventory will be used to fill scout orders and the final show and sales.
We still have show and sales at Lowe’s on Military Highway with open slots on November 3 (5 p.m.-8 p.m.) and November 12 (8 a.m.-2 p.m.). Once the inventory is gone, it is gone. If we sell out before the show and sales, we will have to cancel them, so please don’t count on those to reach a desired goal. We can sell into December, if needed, but must submit prize requests on December 4th.
Online sales are still going, and you can continue to sell online until November 20th. Remember customers get FREE shipping for all online orders.
Some additional show and sales have been added in early November. If you would like to sign up for a show and sale, please contact Shayna with the day and time slot. We divided all show and sales into 1 hour time slots, but scouts may sign up for more than 1 time slot. Scouts must be in Class A uniform when selling, especially at show and sales.
Teasa got the go-ahead last night for popcorn show & sale this Sunday at the Chili’s near the base/commissary. Please contact her directly to schedule yourself or your scout for a shift.
Since our hike last weekend was cancelled due to inclement weather, we are planning a “makeup” hike at First Landing State Park this Sunday, October 1st. We plan to arrive around 1pm and be done no later than 3:30pm, hiking the Cape Henry to White Hill Lake to Long Creek trail, about 5.4 miles total. No pressure for anyone to join if you are already busy or are not interested, just being inclusive with our invitation. If you’d like to join, please call or text Scott Guirlinger, or email us, to coordinate. Please eat lunch beforehand so you only need to carry hiking essentials.
Troop 5 will be going to Busch Gardens on Saturday, October 21st. The Troop will also camp at Anvil Campground Friday & Saturday nights. A shuttle is available to take scouts to and from the campground.
Brown bag dinner on Friday night
Plan for Troop breakfasts Saturday & Sunday mornings
Scouts should bring additional money to eat Saturday lunch & dinner in the park
We are estimating camping to be approximately $30/person for the weekend – final cost will depend on the number of attendees & sites needed to accommodate everyone.
Busch Gardens passes will also depend on who has annual passes & whether they have “friends” passes that can be shared. Please be prepared to purchase a ticket. More information will be provided once we receive RSVP responses.
Please complete the RSVP no later than 10/10 so the appropriate reservations can be made in advance.
Our popcorn show & sale on September 22nd and our day hike on September 23rd have been cancelled due to inclement weather from the approaching tropical storm. Shayna Hart is in direct contact with any scouts who signed up to sell popcorn at this show & sale. We may coordinate a makeup show & sale on Sunday, September 24th based on availability and weather.
Due to lack of availability this coming weekend and conflicts with popcorn sales, we are planning a hike in place of the September camping trip. Scott Guirlinger (Owen’s Dad) will lead this outing.
We need at least one other adult to attend. The plan is to complete a 5+ mile day hike, leaving at 8:30am from the church (or other central meeting point) and returning by dinnertime. We are looking at either Merchants Millpond State Park (NC) or Pocahontas State Park (VA) and are open to other suggestions within a 2-hour driving radius.
